The 11th Annual Limbsnapping

August 16-18, 2024

We’re at it again – the 11th Annual Limbsnapping is a go! New or old, Limbsnapping has always been a celebration of our yearly accomplishments as a community. Limbsnapping, the name, is a nod to the age-old tradition of cracking a champagne bottle over the prow of a ship as it embarks on its first voyage to bring good luck on the journey ahead. At The Root, we’ve transformed this tradition into our own. Instead of smashing glass bottles, we carve out a moment every year to snap twigs or tree branches in unison, to honor and celebrate all that we’ve created and all of the new, exciting things we will continue creating together. So for those of you who hear the name Limbsnapping and think this is a heavy metal festival where we’re breaking bones in the woods – now you know–it’s so much better than that.

In the 11 years that we’ve been hosting Limbsnapping we’ve come to learn many valuable lessons. Most importantly, that The Root Community is so much more than just a small group of friends camping in tents, huddled around bonfires, and freezing in winter frosts- as it was in our first few years. It’s become something so much bigger and more meaningful than we could have ever imagined. Today, The Root is an ever-expanding community of artists, makers, thinkers, doers, and people who just know how to party–who love being in community and in nature – these are the people who have come to make this annual gathering a unique and unforgettable celebration of life, possibility, and imagination.

In its various iterations over the 11 years, Limbsnapping has continued to inspire us to pursue the ways that we can best serve our community here in the Mohawk Valley and beyond. Since 2013 we’ve hosted artist residencies, workshops, sculpture competitions, and so much more. We host Pizza Friday, a pay what you can wood-fired pizza picnic every week through the late spring-early fall that brings our local community together over food and conversation. We’ve built and continue to nurture relationships with local farmers, makers, artists, and community leaders to share skills and resources and offer The Root as a place for dreaming and building together.

Our plans for the future are boundless. And we’re grateful to be able to continue to make space for celebration in honor of all that we’ve built and all of the ways that our community and mission continue to expand and evolve. So let’s get down bigger and better than we ever have and make this 11th Annual Limbsnapping the best one yet! Just like we do every year.

See you all in the mud!
